| The letters supporting applications are given
considerable weight in the selection process. The most helpful
letters are those that include details of the writer’s
basis for judgement and measures the capabilities of the applicant
in terms of the criteria applied by the selection committee.
The criteria for selection are academic excellence, demonstrated
interest in and knowledge of Canadian parliamentary government
and politics, evidence of the skills needed to assist a Member
of Parliament in the performance of his or her duties, personal
maturity and a basic understanding of both official languages.
(The candidate's language skills will be tested at the interview
stage).
